What to send
- Standing spray: the default for a funeral home or temple. Reads clearly from the aisle.
- Wreath: round, often with a ribbon across the center. Common from coworkers or a family group.
- Heart tribute: usually from children, siblings, or a spouse — ask the family first.
- Basket or vase: better for a home visit after the service, or when the venue has no easel space.
Vietnamese-language services
Many San Jose families hold a wake at a funeral home and a ceremony at a Buddhist temple or Catholic parish. White chrysanthemums, lilies, and roses are traditional. A bilingual ribbon (for example “Kính viếng / With deepest sympathy”) helps elders and younger relatives both read the card from a distance.
If you are not immediate family, avoid all-red designs unless the family asked for them. Immediate family sometimes uses a mix of white and a small amount of color; friends usually stay with white and cream.
English-language and mixed families
The same sprays and wreaths work. Color can follow the family’s request — we do not invent a “house style” over a family’s wish. If you do not know, white and soft pink are the safest send.
